Custom Software Case Studies

Our portfolio reflects the problems we solve best: systems that replace manual processes, connect disconnected tools, give leadership better visibility, and create technical foundations built to grow. The industries and company sizes vary. The focus stays the same — build technology that earns its place in the business.

Multi-Store Retail POS & CRM Platform: 98.7% Inventory Accuracy

Retail · Multi-Store Operations — Cloud-native POS and CRM platform built for a multi-store retail company in South Florida — replacing fragmented, semi-offline infrastructure with a unified operating system.

Operational fragmentation at scale. With multiple active store locations and a growing product catalog, the company was dealing with a set of compounding operational failures that made it impossible to manage the business from a single, reliable source of truth.

J14 Design built a full-stack, cloud-native platform on a multi-tenant architecture. The system was designed to serve all store locations from a single, centralized infrastructure — with location-level isolation where needed for operations, but consolidated data everywhere it mattered for management. The Cloud-Native POS Engine was built entirely as a browser-based application, eliminating all local software dependencies. Each terminal required only a modern browser and an internet connection. The transaction engine ran on Node.js with a React frontend, supporting barcode/QR scanning, cash and card processing, real-time price synchronization across all locations, role-based access by terminal, and an offline fallback mode with local transaction queuing and automatic sync upon reconnection.

  • Inventory accuracy improved to 98.7% — real-time multi-store synchronization eliminated overselling and the manual stock reconciliation that was consuming 4–6 hours of manager time daily.
  • Customer retention rate increased — the loyalty program and CRM-driven communication re-engaged a significant portion of lapsed customers within the first 90 days.
  • Reporting time reduced from 24+ hours to real-time — leadership moved from reviewing yesterday's spreadsheet to watching live performance across all locations from a single dashboard.
  • New store onboarding reduced to under 2 hours — adding a location required only browser access and system configuration, no hardware installation.
  • Zero dependency on local hardware — a terminal failure at any location required only a replacement device and a browser. Operations resumed in under 5 minutes.

Enterprise Construction Microservices & ERP Integration Layer

Construction · API & System Integration — Five independently deployable microservices integrating a construction company's live systems — ERP, accounting, subcontractors, documents, and field data — without disrupting a single day of operations.

Integration complexity on top of a live production environment. The construction company's core platform was actively managing project timelines, procurement, subcontractor coordination, field reporting, and document workflows across active job sites. Any integration work had to happen without compromising the stability of those running systems.

J14 Design delivered a domain-driven microservices architecture in which each integration concern was isolated into its own independently deployable service unit. Rather than building a monolithic middleware layer that would become a shared dependency across all integrations, each service owned its own configuration, retry logic, error handling, and interface contract. Single Responsibility: each microservice owned exactly one integration domain. Contract-First API Design: OpenAPI specification documents were produced before writing any service implementation code, allowing the internal team to review and validate before a line of code was committed. Idempotent Operations: all data synchronization operations were designed to be safely re-runnable. Event-Driven Communication: services communicated through an event queue rather than direct API calls. Circuit Breaker Pattern: each outbound integration implemented circuit breaker logic — preventing cascading failures from propagating into the core platform.

  • Five independent integration domains delivered as separately deployable, fully documented microservices — within scope, on schedule, and without disruption to the active production environment.
  • Internal team onboarding completed in under 3 days — OpenAPI specs, Docker configurations, deployment runbooks, and architectural documentation gave the team complete operational ownership.
  • Zero production incidents during the parallel operation periods preceding each service cutover. Every data discrepancy was resolved before cutover, not after.
  • Integration failures dropped to near zero — circuit breaker patterns and idempotent operation design eliminated the class of intermittent sync failures that had previously required manual intervention.
  • The internal team extended two of the five services within the first quarter after handoff — adding new field mappings to the ERP service and a new document type to the document workflow service — without J14 Design involvement.

Offline-First Field Operations Mobile App (iOS & Android)

Field Services · Mobile · Multi-Region — A native iOS & Android app paired with a real-time web platform — replacing paper forms, spreadsheets, and fragmented communication for a field services company operating in 2 countries in Latin America.

Bridging the gap between field reality and operational visibility across two countries. The technical and organizational challenge was multi-layered, compounded by geography, connectivity limitations, and the diversity of devices and languages across the operation.

The solution was designed as a two-component system with a deep synchronization layer connecting both: a native mobile application (iOS and Android) and a web-based management platform — both operating from the same backend API and data store. The mobile app was built using a cross-platform framework that compiled to native code for both iOS and Android, ensuring access to platform-native APIs (camera, GPS, biometric authentication, background processing) while maintaining a single shared codebase. The app implemented an offline-first data model — every data entity the field employee needed was downloaded to the device at the start of the shift. Work performed offline was stored in a local SQLite database with a full transaction log. On reconnection, the sync engine evaluated the local transaction log against the server state and applied changes in the correct sequence using conflict resolution rules defined per data type. The web platform provided real-time data delivery via WebSocket connections — supervisors watching a team dashboard would see a new completed work order appear within seconds of the field employee submitting it.

  • Daily data capture volume increased by 340% — structured digital capture replaced paper forms across all territories, eliminating the transcription bottleneck and capturing data that had previously been lost (photos, GPS coordinates, timestamps, structured observations).
  • Supervisor visibility improved from next-day to real-time — the 24+ hour lag between field activity across 2 Latin American countries and back-office awareness was eliminated entirely.
  • Cross-timezone data integrity confirmed — every record captured across the company's operating regions carried correct timezone-aware timestamps, enabling accurate consolidated reporting without manual time adjustments.
  • Client record completeness improved significantly — the unified client profile replaced fragmented personal notes and spreadsheet rows with a structured, searchable, complete operational history.
  • Paper forms eliminated entirely across all territories and all regions of the operation.
  • New form deployment time reduced from weeks to hours — operational changes reached all field devices in both countries without app store updates or device-level installations.
